Korea Era Veteran Support Project (July 2023 – March 2024)In July of 2023 we found a Korea Era Veteran that needed help to Aging in Place type upgrades to his home for his safety and comfort. We felt these upgrades could be accomplished given we could raise funds and find contractors willing to work with us on individual tasks. Little did we know at the time we started this project how large the scope would turn out to be and how much help we would eventually receive from the community. This veteran needed upgrades to bathroom facilities, home electrical service, access door, as well as, roof repairs. As we worked to raise the funding necessary to tackle the many upgrades needed we worked with local contractors to accomplish the work task by task. To accomplish the major task of upgrading the Electric Service to the home and correcting may existing unsafe wiring issues, we teamed with Purple Heart Homes Statesville, NC who hired Hickey Electric of Amherst to perform that work. During the course of this nine (9) month project we were able to accomplish the following:• Replaced a broken toilet with a new one• Replaced a broken utility sink with a new one• Made room for and installed a new walk-in shower unit• Had the entire roof resealed • Replaced a broken washing machine • Fixed numerous leaks in the existing plumbing• Replaced a non-working well pump with a new submersible pump and expansion tank, to include replacing the underground line to the house• Replaced an old weathered wood sliding door with a new aluminum garage door w/opener • Upgraded the electric service panel from old antiquated glass fuse panel to new 200 amp breaker panel and corrected many electrical safety issues with existing wiring.• Replace torn canopies with a new metal car port In the nine months this project took we were truly blessed with support from the community in the form of funding donations and so many local contractors that ensured we were able to accomplish the tasks within the budget we had available. Special thanks to the following Contractors for their substantial support to our efforts:• Ferguson Plumbing Supply, Danville, VA• Hall’s Well & Pump, Arrington, VA• Hickey Plumbing, Air, and Electrical, Amherst, VA, • James Jessie Roofing Lynchburg, VA• Mark Smith, Lynchburg, VA• Southside Mechanical Services, Danville, VAAlso, special thanks to Purple Heart Homes Statesville, NC for teaming with us to see this project completed.
